This WFA Online blog outlines a section in a book written by Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric, titled “Winning”. Quote: “Winning in business is great because when companies win, people thrive and grow.”
Jack goes on to explain a substructure of principles to his approach to business. At WFA Online High School, we believe in those exact same principles. Our first “Winning” blog will focus on the very first of them, being the importance of having a strong brand mission and concrete values. The same principles are versatile and can be applied to any household, business, or sports team. Let’s examine them one by one.
A Strong Mission – WFA Online Insights:
Jack mentions in his book that a strong mission basically answers one question: “How do we intend on winning in this business?” Even a 14 year old can ask that question!
Examples:
- How many hours do I need to study to achieve a pass rate of 60%?
- How many times do I need to review an amount of work in order to memorise the content?
- Have I completed a reading course at the start of the academic year?
- How do I ensure that I attend all lectures?
- How do I determine the time needed to start with preparations before attempting an exam?
- How do I follow a healthy sleep routine?
- How do I foster healthy family relationships at home?
- How do I select friends who will set their own mission statements too?
Having Strong Values – A Key Focus of WFA Online:
Jack also mentions that values are just behaviours, further being described as specific, nitty-gritty, and so descriptive that they leave little to the imagination.
Examples:
- Never let personal gain get in the way of doing what is right unto others.
- Deliberately build good relationships with like-minded learners.
- Always look for ways to make it easier for others to be friends with you.
- Communicate daily with your family members.
- Thank you goes a long way.
- Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t.
- Always strive to tell the truth.
At WFA Online High School, it is our duty to help our learners develop their own mission and value statements.
